Lo-fi folk can be as terrifying as it is sweet - terrifying because there's no shroud of auditory complexity between singer and listener, terrifying because there's a certain forced intimacy in listening to lo-fi folk, like being stuck in an elevator with a guy (in this case) and his guitar.
The Overdubs' Ryan Townsend seems particularly aware of the risks he's taken musically - for him the first time around was a journey in soullessness, quickly thrown away. This time the result of his musical soul-baring has yielded strong results, concerned with sickness and facing death (the subject of "Trying Bravery"). The simplicity of his voice and relative lucidity of his lyrics can make the first listen awkward, like sitting next to a stranger who's just a little too close. It's worth a second listen, a third - because then it's not a stranger anymore, and the closeness is suddenly poignant, reaching into something quiet and unspoken until now.
