Happy (belated) Birthday Philip Glass! (indie kids beware!)

This post is going to be a bit different.
Over the weekend I noticed that it was Phillip Glass' 70th birthday year, and the New York Times wrote a wonderful article which basically gave a retrospective of minimalism as a musical movement. As a musician, I rather dislike it. Playing minimalist music is a test of patience and often very tedious. However, I must admit I have quite a love of minimalist music as a listener. Minimalism has a hypnotic quality to it, that sucks you into the sound and subtly morphs around you. When listening to the likes of Avro Part, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass, the music paints a journey. It has a beginning, it has an end, and the two are far apart, separated by a slowly changing landscape.
Steve Reich - America Before the War (performed by The Kronos Quartet)
Tony Conrad - Four violins (the ultimate experimental minimalism)
Philip Glass - String Quartet No. 5 - 3 (also performed by The Kronos Quartet)
