    1. politicians need to learn to distance their sons' and daughters' decisions from their own platforms and agendas. that was Romney's failure.

    2. it's funny how this is an issue only with the GOP. I'd say that the "family values" bit makes it such a big deal--any difference of opinion in a family (witness Giuliani's daughter's facebook story) is seen as the politician's not spending enough time at home, which runs contrary to the platform.

    Romney could have said "they're grown men, and while I encourage them to serve our country in the military, it is their own decision not to do so and it bears no relevance to my candidacy." But that doesn't please the base, now does it?

    This is just a theory. Any thoughts?

    I think the only presidential candidate with a child in the armed services is Joe Biden, but that could be off. I find it a little disgusting that Giuliani and Romney are winning right now as the pro-military, pro-torture tough on terror candidates against McCain, a veteran and former P.O.W.
