The National: Boxer

I've recently been listening to Boxer (to be released on May 22) somewhat obsessively, and thought I'd step out of my late slump to make the effort to post on it.
My first encounter with the National was a quiet one, the kind you leave behind until something truly great puts it in an entirely different context. I was a sophomore in high school with the biggest crush on a guy four years older than me. He had returned from college on break, and gave me a mix CD, which I proceeded to listen to obsessively, looking for some small speckle of hope in my general lack thereof. Somewhere in there was a song called "Murder Me Rachael" - a flicker of light in the distance, if a dim one. I remembered the cd, but forgot about the band - until recently.

Now, listening to Boxer, I'd like to think I'm a bit older and wiser, but some things about The National haven't changed: the self-deprecating lyrics, the quiet joy hidden beneath Matt Berninger's deep, sad voice.

Edwards + Joe Trippi?

Joe Trippi has joined Edwards' campaign as a media consultant. Seeing how he was at Oberlin last weekend giving a talk about how none of the Democratic presidential candidates had yet to harness the "populist" movement in the Democratic party (What populist movement?), he was unsure of which Democrat to support. As least he won't be managing money working for Edwards.
Something I didn't mention before: Having just spoken about Hillary vs Obama vs Edwards, Trippi made a vague comment about someone being unwilling to admit they were wrong, then asked if there was a reporter in the room with some concern. I wonder what he was talking about?

Meanwhile, Jerry Springer came to Oberlin last night...

When change is good: Cassadaga

"An ambition, I've found, can lead only to failure.
I do not read the reviews.
No, I am not singing for you.”

The Conor Oberst who resides in my mind is a 20, maybe 22-year-old guy with messy brown hair and puppy eyes and a knack for writing emotional and often angry lyrics. The release of Digital Ash in a Digital Urn and I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning in 2005 was something of a shock to most Bright Eyes fans – their prophet had turned around his act to become something beyond a singer-songwriter; his work was now that of a veritable musician. As it has recently become clear, this transformation was partly stirred by the addition of permanent non-Conor Oberst members to Bright Eyes. “At the Bottom of Everything,” my favorite track off I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, is particularly revealing in this regard. After a minute-long spoken introduction of sorts, Oberst counts “1, 2, 1-2-3-4” and the response is a flowering of instrumentation into song. Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott appear to be responsible for the shift – Mogis acting as producer while Walcott is responsible for new, more complex string arrangements.

But a great deal of the change in Bright Eyes’ music in Cassadaga appears to have stemmed from Oberst himself, who has matured in his song-writing beyond all expectations. It serves as Bright Eyes' first "concept album", its storytelling based around a spiritualist camp in Florida for psychics. Cassadaga’s brightest spots come with deliberate restraint, as in “Four Winds” and “I Must Belong Somewhere” which seem to exude a new acceptance and cautious optimism lacking in all previous Bright Eyes works. Despite this, the slower tracks on Cassadaga are generally its weakest moments (“Lime Tree” and “Cleanse Song,” for example), with the notable exception being “If The Brakeman Goes My Way” about the purging of drugs and chemicals Oberst underwent in 2006. “Make A Plan To Love Me” is just plain sappy in the worst way possible. Some other highlights are “Hot Knives”, “Classic Cars”, and “Soul Singer in a Session Band.” The instrumentation in Cassadaga, likewise, hits its strongest moments when it relies on country and folk music for inspiration. Fans looking for blunt social commentary and brash frustration in Cassadaga will only be disappointed, but may find that somewhere in the calm, there is a new peace.

Walker Kong

I recently realized that, having gotten some sample tracks from their new album, I've been listening to Walker Kong obsessively.
Deliver Us From People was released on March 27th with a surprisingly low amount of blog coverage (see what I mean). Without giving off an air of pretentiousness, Walker Kong pulls off a quirky mix of folk verging on twee pop and cheerful indie rock. "Andy Warhol and the Honey Bees" begins with a marching band's drum beat, on which a quiet acoustic guitar and an understated tenor (somehow reminding me of Skeleton Jar Youth Group) come to float on top of, carrying the song into the realms of perfect pop-dom.

Plus, he doesn't seem to know the difference between Sunnis and Shi'ites (do you really want this guy making foreign policy in the middle east?) and he's still firmly for legal abortions (and the right is really going to go for this???)

updated New Pornographers album

The news of an upcoming New Pornographers album happened while I was on blog leave, but today Pitchfork released an interview with A.C. (or Carl) Newman in which he revealed some more details about the album. It's to be called Challengers, and will be released in August.

As for the tracklisting, some Dan Bejar songs to appear on the album are "Myriad Harbor," "Entering White Cecilia," and "The Spirit of Giving," and some of the other tracks are "All These Things That Go to Make Heaven and Earth", "Go Places", "Challengers", and "All the Old Showstoppers." Newman also mentioned that the album is quieter and includes a 6-and-a-half minute song, something unusual for the NP's. From the interview, it also sounds like Neko Case will be touring with NP's in the fall, though Dan Bejar is unlikely to (if you've ever been to a New Pornographers' concert, it's pretty freaking obvious that he HATES playing live). Read the full interview here.

Giuliani & McCain: Ferrets and Bullet-proof Vests

Need more convincing that Giuliani would make an awful president? Here's the latest evidence. It involves Ferrets.

Meanwhile, can McCain see straight in regards to Iraq? Although I've been rooting for him for years and believe he would make a great president, the best out of the Republican lot, two things about him concern me greatly: Israel and Iraq. The recent reports about McCain's trip to Iraq, after which he claimed that he could stroll the streets of Baghdad, show that McCain and other Senators were intensely sheltered and guarded. I fear McCain is projecting his feelings about Vietnam onto Iraq, something that could become incredibly dangerous were he to become president.

Meanwhile, I hope Hillary is sweating campaign contributions, because Obama's going to catch up...

Baraka Noel

Here's my funny story: 2 weeks ago, in my weekly downloading spree, I downloaded some tracks by a guy named Baraka Noel and began listening to them only to discover that this rapper I'd never heard of was essentially the long-lost brother of Immortal Technique. The lyrics alone, provocative, angry, and thoughtful, were worthy of the comparison. Meanwhile, this unknown rap artist had somewhat sophisticated instrumental backing - a lilting violin in one track and a bright brass section in another. Who was this guy?
I ran a google search (the solution to all my problems) only to discover that this amazing rapper was virtually unknown and... an Oberlin student. I swell with school pride.

I am not among the many bloggers who pre-ordered this album from Saddle Creek and therefore probably won't being hearing the album in its full until its actual release date.
