My first encounter with the National was a quiet one, the kind you leave behind until something truly great puts it in an entirely different context. I was a sophomore in high school with the biggest crush on a guy four years older than me. He had returned from college on break, and gave me a mix CD, which I proceeded to listen to obsessively, looking for some small speckle of hope in my general lack thereof. Somewhere in there was a song called "Murder Me Rachael" - a flicker of light in the distance, if a dim one. I remembered the cd, but forgot about the band - until recently.
Now, listening to Boxer, I'd like to think I'm a bit older and wiser, but some things about The National haven't changed: the self-deprecating lyrics, the quiet joy hidden beneath Matt Berninger's deep, sad voice.
