...is one of the blogosphere's latest obsessions, which I happen to share. Lungs (released July 6 in Britain) is doing great on the UK charts, we'll see if Florence Welch's music can cross the Atlantic. Reasons to listen: Welch has a soul singer's voice and a dark sense of humor. She's set to compete with the likes of Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen, though she may be a little too indie-chick to catch on with a mainstream American audience.Florence & The Machine - Kiss With A Fist [download or die]

...must. blog. about. Farfarlo. before. July. 4...I'm a bit in love with these british kids lately, who released their debut album, Reservoir, this year (in May, I think). Anyhow, you can still download their album for $1 until July 4th, so get to it! Fans of Beirut are sure to like these guys, and I'm not even much of a Beirut fan and I love 'em to!

I'm seriously looking forward to getting back to Obie-land, where hippies and hipsters roam free in their natural habitats. The posting will be sketchy for the next 5 or 6 days, but stick with me - things should get back to normal by next Tuesday. There's no lack of bands I'd like to post about, just a shortage of time.
Noah & the WhaleI've been smiling at these British fellows' music all week - it would have been perfect for the Life Aquatic. Think low-fi goodness geared towards sing-a-longs, complete with handclaps and tambourines. The band's first single (it's of an EP length) is due out September 24th.

Or, The WhaleGood alternative country and folk rock (whatever term floats your boat) seems to come from all directions - in this case it's from San Francisco, and it's accessible and unpretentious, catchy and enjoyable. I'm thinking it'll be perfect for the long drive to Ohio, especially since I'll be with my favorite Bob Dylan fan.

Somehow it's been 2 months since the release of It's A Bit Complicated, and I've never re-declared my love of Art Brut.(1) If you've heard of Art Brut and have their new album, ignore the rest of this post, but check out the video.
(2) If you've heard of Art Brut and don't have their new album, skip down to the downloads.
(3) If you haven't heard of Art Brut, stick with me (or, alternatively, skip to the downloads).
Like Bang Bang Rock & Roll, the newest Art Brut album seems to exist to document Eddie Argos' conquests and failures of the female variety, accompanied by his voice that speaks but never sings, backed up by a his band mates, who play some quality Rock & Roll. The British-ness doesn't hurt.

So The Lodger released Grown-Ups in the US in June, and as usual, I missed it. They're three British chaps with a knack for making familiar-sounding pop along the lines of Hum favorites Walker Kong and Voxtrot. However, I've been told recently by a certain Texan that I need to streamline my music references, so they sound like the freakin' Killers, okay! (not!) ...just kidding. If you're in the UK, The Lodger is playing a show in Leeds on July 28, and a bunch more shows in September.I think their drummer, Katie, looks a little like Melissa George, who played Lauren Reed (aka evil chick who marries Vaughn) on Alias, is this just me?

OK, time for an embarrassing story: sometime in middle school (yes, middle school) I went through a Seal obsession. Here's another not-as-embarrassing story: sometime in high school I fell head over heels with Damien Rice's O.
What's the connection between these two disparate stories? Stuart Masters, the singer-songwriter who appeals to both of my old obsessions, while doing nothing to kill my hipster cred (unlike Seal).
It's Saturday, I do get to be a little silly. Back to the point.
With incredibly layered instrumentation for a up-and-coming solo artist and a voice that stretches to express its sincerity, Stuart Masters' work is seriously worth a look. (Also, he's British...us state-side girls know why this matters...)
