Two birdy bands, one humongous stone
0 Comments Published by Kate on Thursday at 8/02/2007 02:23:00 PM.When I first heard these guys last summer I thought David Bazan (Pedro the Lion) had started a side project. This time around I forgot I'd heard The Mohawk Lodge before and figured Bazan had decided that going by his own name instead of Pedro the Lion and working on Headphones wasn't enough - he'd gotten some groupies and started a rock band. I have to keep reminding myself it's not his voice I'm hearing.
This is what Bazan would sound like if catchiness was a priority of his (it's not). For non-Pedro the Lion Fans, this is homegrown folk-rock that doesn't try to be cool, but is anyway.

I got hooked on these guys after MOKB posted on them a week ago. "Black River" and "Lady Blue" sound like a songs of chain gangs and dusty dirt roads, with choruses like "You've got to keep on movin' along." The darkness surrounds you and voices chant together, and the Phantom Family Halo is there singing along.
