I keep feeling bad about not writing here more often, but then I think: guess what? It's been a tough semester.
I've been enjoying the new (not-so-new by blogger standards) Sea Wolf, Weakerthans, Maritime, and Georgie James albums a good deal.
Georgie James: Places
I was a little disappointed by the Georgie James album for basically the same reason I initially had problems with the Broken String. With Places, I'd become so attached to the sound of the EPs that the changes in the songs bothered me a bit. And unlike BA's more successful EP compressing attempt, the studio revamp sounded awfully overdone and just a bit too...straight-edge? I like rough edges to my pop.

Sea Wolf: Leaves in the River
Here's the way I usually get into albums: there'll be a track or two I'll slowly let seep into my music-listening habits. Sometimes it will get to the point where I can't help but buy a whole album; sometimes I'll just settle with a few more tracks from eMusic, iTunes, more sketchy sources. Sea Wolf is a great example of where this method leads to success (see previous posts), and also serves as a case study of why bands should leak tracks before an album's release. Leaves in the River is well on its way to making my list of this year's best releases - my only critique is that the introductions on a number of songs, including "The Rose Captain" and "Neutral Ground" are just a little off, not to mention too long.

I'd been dying to see Georgie James for ages and ages, so finally seeing them at Fort Reno was something of a relief. So was finally meeting up with Jason (who often contributes here) for a concert!Brandon Butler and Perfect Souvenir opened the night, I liked Brandon Butler but wasn't getting into Perfect Souvenir so much (though I like that they had a guy - not a girl, for once - playing the xylophone). During Brandon Butler's set it was pretty apparent that the guy really just wants to be Dylan, which I feel is a noble aspiration.

Up at the end was Georgie James, who put on a highly dance-worthy set, and the high school kids in the front section did get their groove on. I was impressed with the songs from the new album (see previous posts) that I hadn't heard before, "Places" especially.

It should be common knowledge by now that I'm obsessed with Georgie James. This hasn't been confirmed anywhere officially, but Insound has the release date for Places listed as September 25th, and Insound is never wrong...(or maybe it is).(Update: I had the date right.)
Also, their myspace seems to have the studio versions (rather than the demos) of "More Lights" and "Need Your Needs" available for streaming. I can't tell with "Cake Parade".

For those who don't know already, Georgie James = John Davis (of Q and Not U) + Laura Burhenn, and they've been making a healthy mix of soulful dance and indie pop music for the past year or so. After much waiting and hair pulling by me, they promised that by January we'd have some concrete information about when they're releasing an album and other such things, and it's finally here!
Their new album will be titled Hello but we don't know what label it will be coming out on yet, or when (*roars*). HOWEVER, you can now buy Demos at Dance Place (buy) or the new Need Your Needs EP (buy) from Dischord Records....
