The Phenomenal Handclap Band

While I've been moving into my new house this week, I've been listening to a lot of '70s music ... mostly because it's what's on. Nonetheless, the Phenomenal Handclap Band, with its modest name, pays homage to motown, soul, and disco in a way that's not exactly new, but definitely enjoyable.

Chain & The Gang

I saw these kids opening for M. Ward a couple of weeks ago, and found their anti-folk Dead Milkmen-like humor entirely endearing. "Deathbed Confession," in particular, is an excellent song.

Quick Update + Free!

I'm here to apologize for the lack of frequent posting on the blog for the past two weeks. I've been staying with my folks, attempting to unpack and repack and generally get myself organized but failing miserably.

As a side effect, I've been listening to too many podcasts (old episodes of This American Life, Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, and Free: The Future of A Radical Price by Chris Anderson available as a FREE audiobook on iTunes and Audible), reading too much Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and neglecting the immense quantities of new music in my inbox. Also, Chrome (the internet browser, not the operating system) is pretty wonderful.

This is not a plug for all or any of the above. Only it is.

Modest Mouse "King Rat"

In anticipation of No One's First and You're Next EP (out yesterday), I've been re-listening to Good News For People Who Love Bad News obsessively, and so I was surprised to see this on my RSS feed:

According to Stereogum, Heath Ledger directed this music video before he died. Which explains why it's freakin' amazing! Proceeds from the video got to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

new Blitzen Trapper EP!

I'm not quite sure what to make of this track from Blitzen Trapper's upcoming EP, to be released on August 25th. And the music video? It has its odd moments, though these are nothing compared to the music video released for Jose Gonzales' "Killing for Love" last year (so creepy!). I'm glad Blitzen Trapper is making new music, but I'm not sure I'll be chilling out with the EP on my drive to Ohio like I did with Wild Mountain Nation. Furr, though, will probably make the cut.
