So when the metro was vaguely functional last Thursday, there was a tremendous sense of solidarity amongst my fellow commuters. I lent a stranger my cell phone; people gave away their seats and made room for those getting on. Even more dramatically: eye contact was established. The usual dark silence of the train mellowed.
